Chloe - TAG - NY
Hello Shirley,
Chloe is doing fine and has made herself
at home. Here she is with my wife cuddling up to her. She's eating
really well and enjoys her treats of fruits and veggies in the evening
that she gets and is using her water bottle now. She is the most
friendly bird I have ever seen and has no problem going to check out
different people like my daughter and grandson when they came over. She
checks out everything when she on the floor running around. We are just
amazed at the job you did of getting her to this point and if any
of our friends ever decide to get a bird you will be very highly recommended
by us. She's on my shoulder right now as I'm writing this and playing
with my hair.

We're home finally. She is a beautiful bird. She is in
her cage and eating her pellets right now. The plane was 30 min. late
and it took us longer to get home because of a severe thunder storm that
delayed us another 40 mins. During the whole trip she did just fine.
Thank you so much. Will send an update in a few days.

Ebunah - TX
Good day.
Ebunah is doing great (or should I say spoiled rotten). She pleasantly
chatters (no talking) but is the most loving being I have ever met.
Respectfully and thank you for all you do for these wonderful beings.

It was more than a pleasure to meet you and your
entire family.
Because of you, your family, and the love from all of
you, Ebunah is one of the most loving beings I (and Mabel)
have ever encountered.
Thank You All!! This is not meant to be
disrespectful to Pipariino, the bird now in heaven , we truly loved her.
I hear our gift ( Ebunah) jabbering and I know
that is a big sign that she will. speak.
As far as I am concerned, Ebunah need never to
speak. She speaks it all through every loving action she makes (thank you
again for the love in her raising)
The amount of love Ebunah has given Mabel and
myself, in one night, can never be put into words anyway.
Truly a gift.
Ebunah slept on my chest last night for about two
hours then she nestled happily in her new cage.
In Ebunah , it is obvious how much love you
are willing to share
FYI she continues to eat a lot of pellets
and drink a lot.
I hope you and yours have a great holiday.

Ebunah - TAG - TX
Ebunah made it home safe and sound.
First she thoroughly checked out her new cage. She
seems to really like it.
After that
She must have been starving because she is chowing
down on the pellets . She seems to like the Harrison as well.
I gave her one piece today to introduce it to her.
Her water bottle is in and she has taken from the
bottle.
She is such a sweetie, thank you again for all the
hard work you do with these animals.
Thank you all for sharing your home, animals and
family with us.
Will take Ebunah to the vet for her first well check
on Tuesday.

Coco - (CAG)- SC
4/10/08
HI :
Just wanted to let you know that
CoCo is doing great and has made herself at home with us. She loves the
fresh veggies and whole wheat pasta but not so much the fresh fruit. I
made the birdy bread from your recipe and found I was eating more of it
than her. I don't have a scale yet but know she is maintaining her weight.
My wife has a lot of collectibles
sitting around the house, but CoCo seems to accept them all as friendly.
She is a little shy about walking on the carpet, but will do it to get
where she wants. She's also not to crazy about taking a shower with
me. However she is a calm and loving bird with no bad behavior like
feather pulling, biting and all rest that I have read about. So thanks
again for such a professional job of raising a fine, loving, bird.
Thanks Henry

Shirley:
the bird has landed.
CoCo is in her new cage and drinking water and
cleaning her self up. The flight was on time and she seem to be treated
ok . she would come to the front of cage to look out when she heard her
name. Now in her cage she's very shy and trying to nap. I will let
you know how she does tomorrow.

Albus - NC
5/18/08
Shirley,
It's been so long since I've written. School has
been crazy--it gets that way this time of year as the days role down and
graduation approaches.
Albus is doing wonderfully. He wakes up with us
bright and early and leaps to the door ready to come out to play.
I put several toys down for him to play with each morning, but he gets
bored with him after 30 minutes or so. And then it turns rather
comical because after paying ten and fifteen (and way more for some of
them) dollars for them, he would rather entertain himself with a tennis
ball or rug on the floor :-) I guess birds aren't that much
different than cats and dogs in that they'd rather ignore the
expensive we buy for them for everyday junk :-)
He's grown about 200 grams since he came. I've
taken him with me to school twice to introduce him to lots of new
people. The kids love him. He was shy with my first class,
but after we took a few minutes and let everyone hold him, he couldn't
get enough attention from as many people as possible. He's a ham
for the center stage. He's really so good. He only screams
in the evenings, and it's only for about 20 or 30 minutes.
My grandmother has been amazed at how much more
sociable he is than our Gray. She is content to hang out by
herself and just watch what's going on around her from a distance.
She will cuddle and play with me, but she would rather sit up high and
watch it all. Albus demands attention--being held or played with
on the floor--or he's going to find something that will get him into
trouble :-)
I logged on to your page a couple of days ago....looks
like the summer will keep you busy with babies :-) Thanks again.
When I remember to bring my camera back from school, I'll take some new
pictures and send to you.

Hey Shirley,
Long time no write... Albus is just wonderful. He's such
a personality. He wakes up with us about 5:30 each morning...eats
his breakfast and plays for a couple hours before I leave for work.
The report is that he's quiet during the day but starts getting excited
about the time I should be returning home. He's graduated from
stepping up before command when I get home to take him out to outright
leaping off of his favorite perch in his cage, grabbing onto the door and
excitedly squawking and flapping because he knows he's getting out to play
:-) His tail has probably grown 8 or more inches since he got here.

Albus - NC
4/1/08
Everything went very well at the vet appointment today. The vet said
that "this baby looks great!" She was also quite shocked
at how big and already beautiful he was :-) He weighed in a 930
grams. The only thing that she wondered about was that vaccine
thing. After talking with you, I read a bunch of articles online by
some pretty credible folks--one from a professor at Texas A&M--that
basically said if a macaw hadn't shown any symptoms of that prior to 14
weeks, it was completely unnecessary to vaccinate because the macaw older
than that would shed the virus anyway if it picked it up. Albus
won't be going around any other birds, and I know Hermione has never, so
we're definitely not going to get it. I guess they very, very rarely
see birds come in that have gone from a wonderful breeder like you to
owner with no middle man (and middle birds), and maybe those do need it.
But..Albus won't :-)
I'll probably thank you about a million times, but I want to thank you
again for doing such an amazing job raising him. Hermione put up a
fight the first time she went to the vet, and they brought the towel in
for Albus, but he was a perfect gentleman. He even let them look in
his ears without too much fuss :-)

Albus - NC
3/30/08
Shirley,
Each day brings a more and more at home Albus. I can tell that
he's really starting to trust me because for the first couple days, he'd
do his flapping after I'd put him on a perch. Now, though, when I
take him out, he starts flapping immediately--he knows I'm not going to
drop him :-)
He looks so funny right now. He loves sweet potatoes...when he eats
them he gets food all over his face :-)
He's now eating everything he can get his beak on--he's eating the
Roudybush breeder pellets, but he still likes the Zupreem fruit blend
better. He wouldn't eat my bird bread until today; he's been going
at it today though. Grapes are his favorite fruits right now--he
eats the apples and carrots and bananas, but he hunts for the grapes
first.
As soon as I walk up to his cage now, he starts raising his foot because
he knows I'm going to take him out to play. He's starting to listen
and obey more and more, too, with his step ups. He needed quite a
lot of prodding to step up once he got to his play top on the top of the
cage, but he would. Now, though, he starting to hear "ste..."
and he raises his foot. He's such a sweet, receptive bird.
Some friends of mine and I went to a funeral receiving tonight, and they
wanted to come in and see him. Albus jumped right up on my friend's
husband's arm and let both of them pet and love on him. He's so well
adjusted! My Grey tolerates strangers better than most Greys do, but
while he'll let others hold him, he won't let others pet him at all.
Albus just ate it up.
Thanks again,
john |
Albus - NC
3/29/08
Albus continues to do well. I can sure tell what a loving
environment he came from. He just loves to have the back of his neck
and his head scratched. It took my Grey probably a month before
she'd let me scratch her neck and head. I can also tell that he's
getting to feel more and more at home because he's climbing down from his
perches in the cage to play with some soft toys on the floor--he's not
feeling the need to be in the highest spot he can all the time now.
He's getting better with step ups--I still have to encourage him when he's
on the perch on the play top of his cage though--he knows he's heading
back into the cage, and he doesn't want to go :-)
Everyone who's come by is amazed that he'll let him/her touch him--people
seem think these birds are just mean by nature, and they're amazed when
Albus will let them pet him like a cat!
He does a really good job entertaining himself. When I first got my
Grey, I made sure not to handle her too much the first month or so so that
she wouldn't get used to constant attention and fail to learn self play,
and she's totally independent, but loving of attention, and I've never had
any problems with her plucking or screaming...I've approached training
Albus the same way, and with all of his toys, he stays playful and fun.
He has this fleece ball kind of thing on the bottom of his cage, and he
loves to kick it around and go chase it, gnaw on it, kick it or hit it
with his head again, chase it some more, and on and on.
Thanks again for him!

Albus - NC
3/28/08
Hi Shirley :-)
So today has been the first day when I completely understood what
you meant by he's a "good eater." Each day he's gotten
more and more comfortable and has eaten more and more and more. He
had been eating enough just not what I thought he would be until today.
We had a church group dinner tonight, and when we returned, he'd eaten
quite a lot of the pellet food. I'd put a little apple and grapes on
the bottom of his cage, and that was nearly gone. I got him out so
that he could flap around, and he had this "knot" above his
breast. My first reaction was fear that he'd fallen and this was a
bad bruise or something but then logic took over and made me realize that
he'd been eating quite a lot and it was just a full crop. He's still
eating on those pellets. This might be a stupid question, but is
there such a thing as him eating too much? He looks like he has a
little golf ball or two hanging out hidden under his gold feathers.
All I've heard from both you and all of the bird books I've read is that
"you have to keep a baby bird eating," so if he's still going at
the food, I assume that's good. Let me know about that--I'm a
worrier by nature :-) I'm just happy to see him so enthusiastically
eating!

Albus - NC
3/28/08-morning
Shirley,
This has been a real memory inducer for me. I'd forgotten how
much food baby birds drop :-) I made some sweet potatoes for dinner
last night, and Albus got some of the leftovers...he seem to enjoy them.
He ate more of his soft foods this morning than he did yesterday morning.
I filled one of his food cups to the brim with the ZuPreem Fruit stuff,
and he's eaten almost 2/3's of the bowl.
He's been pretty quiet--he did let out one of those squawks they're
famous for sounding last night about 5:30 or so.
I let him up on the top of his cage today--there's a play top up
there. I was confident enough that I could get him back down to let
him up there. He'd been eyeing it and craning his neck to tell me
that he wanted up there since the first time I took him out. He ate
for a while, chilled, and surveyed the room, and then he came back down
ready to go back into his cage. Now he's taking an after breakfast
nap :-)
john |
Albus - NC
3/27/08-evening
Albus' appetite seems to be kicking in. He really
hasn't been interested in eating the Roudybush pellets too much, but he's
happily eating the Zupreem fruit blend (it's so funny to see him beak
through the stuff to get the red ones :-) ). He's been eating some
of his soft stuff, and he's drinking lots of water. I expect he'll
continue to eat more and more as he gets more and more comfortable.
I won't bother you with daily "updates" forever...I just
think if I'd been separated from a bird like this after raising it before
it could open its eyes, I'd want to know what was going on with it :-)
john |
Albus - NC
3/27/08
He's been sneezing every once in a while especially after preening
date...The plane was probably pretty dusty. He's not got any
draining, though. He's not eating as much as I thought he would, but
I'm sure he's just feeling this whole new situation out. :-) I
broke out my notes from when I brought Hermione home, and I had noted
"not eating much" on the second day she was home.
john |
Albus - NC
3/27/08
Shirley,
What an amazing bird! Like you said, he was cranky when we got home,
but he was home for less than three hours when it was time for Hermione--my
Grey--to come out for her evening play and soft foods. He felt he
was being left out and wanted out of the cage. It took about 10
seconds of convincing for him to step up to my hand, and then he did.
He's so cuddly and loves the attention that my Grey has never really cared
for. She's just not interested in being stroked that much--a scratch
behind the neck and on the head and some down her back is about all she'll
tolerate. But Albus was all about raising up his wings to get
scratched and stroked all over. We did some step up drills; he's a
pretty quick study.
He's napping now. The only thing I wanted to ask was this:
when should he start eating? He ate a little bird bread out of my
hand, but he hasn't really eaten out of his bowl...none of the breeder
pellets. Should I worry? Or is he just trying to get used to
being somewhere new and he'll start up?
John |
Albus - NC
3/26/08
Hi Shirley!
We are all home safe and sound. I can tell that Albus is
exhausted from the trip. I've put his carrier in the cage, and he's
coming about half way out, seeing us and then creeping back in. :-)
I remember this hesitant get to know you phase. Perhaps he knew that
I was writing to you--he just came out of his carrier and quickly climbed
to a perch and is now just kind of looking us over and already playing
with some of the toys in his cage.
I can't tell you how beautiful he is--though I'm sure you already
know that.
I'll keep you apprised of his goings on over the next few days :-)
And I'll send you some pictures when I find some batteries for my camera.

Stevie Ray (CAG) - TX
3/23/08
We just wanted to let you know that Stevie Ray did
wonderful today! It took him about an hour to come out of the
carry case (inside his cage) but when he did, he seemed very happy.
He has tried out all of his new toys, all 3 food dishes to see what's in
them, and has no problem with the water. He seems to be adjusting
very well. He did nip Fred a little earlier, but the majority of
his nip attempts have been distracted. I think we are going to be
ok.
We really want to thank you for all that you have done
in instructing us how to take care of him. I'm sure we will be
calling on you from time to time, and I will continue to send you
updates. We mainly just wanted to let you know that Stevie is
doing fine.
Thank you again, very much.
Lisa & Fred and
Stevie Ray too!

and let him get used to his new surroundings. Thank you again for
everything!

I have good news today is a good day because when i stick my hand inside

While my kids are at school he plays with his toys and when they come home
he makes bird sounds. I guess that means he's happy to see them. I also
bought him some dried banana chips and some walnuts is that ok for him? |

practice stepping up. We practice for a while and he did OK but he
was still nervous, he kept jumping of and trying to fly towards his cage i
guess that's his safe haven he wants to get back to the cage Ware he can
fell safe. Well that was it for the day and i put him back in the cage

Taku - AK
1/15/08
So far she has said, Hi, Hello, and Pretty Girl. She
uses these words as a ploy to get me to come closer to her cage or get her
out to play. She is also attempting to say other things but I particularly
enjoy the little contented noises she makes as she is getting physical
attention.
It has surprised me how quickly she has given the
gift of trust to me......truly amazing! She is beginning to also accept
the rest of the flock/family to approach touch and feed her.
I can tell that she has come from a caring and loving
environment.
Mark. |

|
Taku - AK
1/13/08 - 1pm
Just wanted to let you know that Taku is doing fine.
She is eating all that is offered, (roudybush, zupreme macaw size,
apples, nuts, etc). This morning I fed her warm oatmeal with a spoon and
she was enjoying it immensely. During the feeding she nibbled a little
on my fingers and held them with her beak. A positive first physical
encounter. She has also taken food from my fingers when offered.
She seems interested in coming out of her cage but is
still a little shy of me.....I'm concerned if she comes out as to how I
will get her back in if she is unwilling to have me handle her. I want
that first out of cage experience to be a good one for her and not cause
her any undue stress.
Anyway, she is beautiful and delightful. I truly do
look forward to this voyage of discovery with her.
I look at her and see a big bird.....and then she does
something that looks awkward or elevates her head bobbing her throat
while eating oatmeal and I see a baby trying to become a toddler.

Taku - AK

A quick update.
She slept in her carrier all night and is still in it,
making little "talking" noises to us as we talk to her, sit
and talk with each other in her presence.
I have postponed the Vet visit until Monday so as to
let her unwind more...I think the trip was quite trying for her.
I'll keep you updated.
At what point should I be concerned about her eating?
I have a Lixit bottle full with the opening approx6-8" above her
perch.....should I put a water bowl down near her carrier?
|
Taku - Alaska
1/12/08 - 5am
Dear Shirley,
Taku is here safely. I just got her home a few minutes
ago. She is hiding in her carrier which I have opened and placed in her
cage.....she looks alittle frazzled.
At the airport, before I could place a blanket over
her cage a curious woman poked her nose up to the front of the carrier
to see "the dog" and received a loud indignant squawk.....I
thought she was going to wet herself....it's not what she expected. I
covered Takus' cage through the airport as there were so many people....i
didn't want her to be nervous over all the bustle, also to retain heat
as we went out to the car.....below zero tonight.
I will give you a quick note later in the day when we
are all up and let you know how she is doing.
from what I can see...she looks very
beautiful......nervous, but beautiful.
Thanks,Mark.

Hi Shirley
Just thought I would give you an update on Ziva's
progress since things are finally settling down after the holidays. She
is doing GREAT!! She is so sweet and lovable, she loves to snuggle
up on my chest and lay her head on my shoulder and get her head
scratched. She is trying really hard to say "step up"
and I swear she tried to say pretty baby a few days ago (maybe just
wishful thinking). She is smart and very curious about everything.
This morning I was across the room and she went to the edge of her cage
(she was out on top) and she was trying to tell me she wanted up.
I went over to her and she got right up on my hand. She is getting
more and more comfortable each day.
My Amazon (Sam) is very curious about Ziva as well, he
wants to get up on her cage in the worst way and check her out but I
won't let him. When he starts squawking, Ziva sure puts him in his
place...she just lets out one loud sound as if to tell him to be quiet.
My husband was teasing me the other day telling me
that I have been doing more baking for my birds in the past few weeks
than I have for him in the past year. That’s not exactly
true....but not really too far from it.
Thank you again and Happy New Year.

scratches and loves to snuggle.
