The African Grey Companion
I
love my Grey birds. They have so much personality packed in their medium size
bodies. Such gorgeous creatures they are. When alone I am never really alone
and always have someone to have a conversation with. My Greys love to interact with
me. They never cease to amaze me with their never ending ability to mimic any sound
be it a word or the telephone ringing. It is difficult when in another room to tell
if the voices I hear are my Grey or a person.
At times they are cuddly
like a cockatoo but not as demanding. They are happy just to be in the busiest room
in the house where they can see and hear everything that is going on. They listen to
every word for something interesting to mimic. Always ready to taste whatever I am
eating, from pizza to spaghetti. Open the refrigerator and I hear "Wanna
bite!".
They are incredibly
intelligent, and use the appropriate words or sounds at just the right time.
When Cuddles hears the phone ring he will say "Hello" as soon as I pick up the
phone to answer it. When everyone leaves the room and he wants someone to come back,
he will make the sound of the telephone ringing! Someone will come into the room to
answer it, but it is only Cuddles!
Because of their
intelligence they can become bored and need a variety of toys to play with. They
also need to be where all the action is and like to participate in
conversations. Mealtime is always a treat with a Grey. They want to eat with
the rest of the family and taste everything.
Greys, either Timneh or Congo, are not for
everyone. They can be a real challenge due to their personality and
intelligence. They have mood changes just like people. If you are not up to a
challenging relationship with a pet then a Grey is not for you. If you want an
everyday easy going, needy cuddle me bird a cockatoo would be a better choice. Greys
are very independent creatures.
Greys are an excellent
companion for someone that lives alone. They are so entertaining and fun to be
with. They are not screamers and aside from talking your ear off are
relatively quiet birds. If you have ever shared space with a Grey you would be lost
without one.
I am never alone with my Grey!
